Dear Oak Park Students, Parents and Families,

Welcome to Oak Park Elementary School - online!  I hope that you and your loved ones had a safe and hopeful summer.  My name is Mrs. Durgampudi and I am your child’s school counselor.  Many students and staff call me Mrs. D. and I certainly enjoy listening to others practice saying my name aloud J

This year by far, has incited many different strong feelings like never before.  From excitement at the start of the decade, to fear and uncertainty when the pandemic struck, only to add more fear, anger and disbelief when our nation witnessed the appalling murder of George Floyd.  His death was a brutal reminder that unfortunately, many people continue to treat people of black complexion as less than or as if black lives did not matter.  My heart goes out to anyone who has had to endure such unfair and hurtful treatment.

Please know that Oak Park Elementary, everyone is welcome!  And we will continue to work as a team to ensure that that remains the case regardless of skin color, religion, socio-economic status, or gender.  We are committed to learning from each other as well as to putting restorative justice practices into action.

As a School Counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the social-emotional, academic, and career development of all students.  To achieve that, I look forward to conducting guidance lessons centered on socio-emotional learning, skills for learning, problem solving, and career development.  With the assistance of our Vice Principal, Ms. Curtis, I will be coordinating the No Place for Hate program to promote respect and kindness.  In addition to the classroom, I will be meeting with students in small groups as well as individually, with parent consent.  Lastly, I will be collaborating with parents, staff, district departments and local organizations to support all Oak Park Elementary students.

I believe that it is never too early to instill curiosity, a love for learning, and the confidence that children need in order to be successful.  When they acquire skills for learning and skills for life, they become tomorrow’s leaders in our global community.  As such, I encourage you to check-in often with your children and ask how their day went, what was learned, discuss their likes and dislikes, do they have any questions or concerns?  Their academic career has already begun, and your involvement is key in the foundation of their success.

It definitely takes a village to raise a child.  Should you have any questions, concerns, or be in search of resources, please do not hesitate to contact me to set up an appointment.

It is an honor to be part of this amazing community, and although we are physically distant, we are here to support you in any way possible.

Wishing you a successful year,                                              Click HERE for my webpage for helpful resources to support your family.
